Having recently graduated Bath Spa University with a first-class BA(Hons) degree in Fine Art, Lauren Cattle has secured a graduate residency at Bath Artists Studios. Her practice resides within the worlds of conceptual art and craftsmanship, exploring the complexity of contemporary issues within our socially constructed society. Whether the format of her work is stone carving, performance or sewing a tailored garment, she uses a variety of mediums to explore themes of uselessness, absurdity, exaggeration and humour. These artworks aim to challenge our notions of value and conformity by contradicting common culture. These contradictions flicker between the material, sign, signified and manual production of her artworks. These constant juxtapositions create a shortfall between the expected and the unexpected. Lauren uses this space to create a visual language of sincerity and sarcasm; utilising irony to question the infrastructure of our socially constructed world.
