I am a figurative painter who sources material for my work from images of pop cultural phenomena I find using Google Image Search. As a child of the MTV and social media generation, I have been brought up in a image saturated world which I find hard to ignore. In this constant production and consumption of images, it seems obvious to me that people feel alienated from reality, and that is why the allure of TV, youtube and social media have taken such a strong hold. It now no longer seems worth taking part in a an experience when you can just experience the experience second hand. This proliferation of images has lead to a ‘highlight reel’, offering the ability to curate your life through the means of Instagram and other social medias. You are constantly asked, “Who are you and how would you like to be seen?” presenting to others only the best of you to create your ideal self. It is these aspects of self presentation and the fabrication of the self that I investigate in my practice.
